SACRAMENTO - Lightweight champion Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez (21-2) will defend his title against Pat Healy (28-16) in Sacramento as the main event for Strikeforce's September card.
"He (Healy) is a very durable journeyman in the sport, never an easy fight," Melendez told News10. "He is a guy who likes to come forward. I like to fight. He likes to fight. I'm pumped and he is also new blood."
Melendez (21-2) who trains out of San Francisco is coming off 7th straight win after defeating Josh Thomson in their third meeting last May.
"El Nino" is considered one of the top lightweights in the world and many anticipate Melendez as part of a super-fight to unify the lightweight belts featuring himself and the UFC lightweight champion Ben Henderson who will fight Frankie Edgar next month.
"I'm in Strikeforce that is my league and people are going to have deal with the number one fighter is in Strikeforce," said Melendez. "But I would definitely love to be the pioneer in bringing the two organizations together."
But before that happens, Melendez will have to stop Healy in Sacramento.
"Him (Healy) and I are going to be like two bulls coming together which makes for some entertainment," Melendez said.
The Sacramento Strikeforce card at Power Balance Pavilion is on September 29th. The card will air on Showtime.
