Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Jonny Gomes clubbed a pinch-hit, tie-breaking two-run homer in the seventh to help the Athletics take a 6-4 victory over the Padres in the middle portion of a three-game set at the Coliseum in Oakland.
After the Padres scored two in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead, the A's answered in the bottom half as Cliff Pennington worked a leadoff walk and Jemile Weeks followed two batters later with a single off of reliever Joe Thatcher (0-2).
Pennington moved to third on a fielder's choice before scoring on a wild pitch by reliever Luke Gregerson. Gomes then followed with his pinch-hit blast into the seats in left-center field to give the home team a two-run lead.
Sean Doolittle (1-0) earned the win despite giving up the lead in the top of the seventh. Oakland starter Tyson Ross carried a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings, but gave up a two-run shot to Carlos Quentin for his only blemish.
Ryan Cook fired a perfect ninth to nail down his third save of the year, while Seth Smith added a solo shot, as the A's won their season-high fifth straight game.
Will Venable smacked a two-run double in the seventh for the Padres, who had won three straight before dropping the first two games of this series.
