STOCKTON, CA - Stockton Arena will play home to the first Strikeforce event since the mixed martial arts league was bought out by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Josh Thornburg who grew up in Valley Springs and went to Calaveras High School will be the featured local fighter on the card that will air on Showtime, Friday night.

"It means a lot, there are a lot of people who support me," Thornburg told News10. "My last fight was in Ohio and nobody got to go watch it."

Thornburg (6-2) lost his Strikeforce debut to Roger Bowling by a three round unanimous decision. He will face James Terry (8-2) on short notice, but the Cesar Gracie fighter who trains with Stockton natives Nick (Strikeforce Welterweight Champion) and Nate (UFC Fighter) Diaz in Lodi is confident he will make his hometown proud.

"I don't know if it will be finished early or what I don't care, I'm going to get the "W" that's all that matters," said Thornburg who was working out at Torres Pacific Coast Martial Arts gym in Stockton Wednesday afternoon.

Although Strikeforce was bought out by the UFC in mid-March it will be business as usual for the San Jose base fight league. However, many believe the merger could mean super-bouts in the near future.

"Strikeforce could become the AFC to the UFC's NFC and we can have a big all out Super Bowl at the end of the year," said Strikeforces' Mike Afromowitz.

The Strikeforce Challengers event at Stockton Arena will feature Justin Wilcox and Rodrigo Damm as the main event that will air on Showtime on Friday, April 1st.

The Strikeforce Weigh In on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Lexington Plaza Waterfront Hotel is open to the public.
