ORANGEVALE, CA - Sacramento County sheriff's homicide detectives believe a man shot to death on a residential street early Tuesday morning knew the man who killed him.
Lester Steven Fish, 32, died from a single gunshot to the upper body.
A second man who was walking with him on Central Avenue near Main Avenue escaped serious injury when a bullet grazed his ear.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman said multiple calls were received of shots fired around 4:10 a.m. on the 9400 block of Central Avenue.
Bowman said the surviving man first told deputies he and Fish had been out walking a dog when they encountered two other men.
Bowman said detectives later discounted the initial story suggesting a random encounter and now believe Fish had some association with the assailant.
The two victims had left a house about four doors away from the shooting scene.
Bowman said neither man lived at the house. Residents were being questioned by detectives.
Detectives were not releasing information on suspects or a possible motive in the shooting, Bowman said.
Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (916) 874-5115.
