Firefighters work to remove driver from overturned semi on I-5 near Elk Grove.
ELK GROVE, Calif. - An overturned semi truck created a mess on Interstate 5 near Elk Grove Friday morning.
According to California Highway Patrol officers on scene, a BMW and a pickup truck collided on the northbound side of I-5 just north of Twin Cities Rd. around 4:20 a.m. The two drivers got out to exchange information and while doing so, a semi truck plowed into the BMW, launching it down an embankment.
The collision caused the semi truck driver to lose control, veer across the interstate and over the median where it overturned and came to a rest across the southbound lanes, said officers
Emergency crews arrived at the scene an extricated the truck driver with undisclosed injuries.
According to officers, the part of the interstate was expected to remain blocked for hours to clean up debris, right and remove the truck.
Traffic was being allowed to pass around the scene, but drivers were advised to use Hwy. 99 as an alternate route if possible.
