MODESTO, CA - Police said on Friday two people who worked in the Stanislaus County Court system had been arrested and charged with embezzling money from their offices.
Barry Lesko worked in the traffic court division and allegedly stole $2,400, while Dawn Rios worked in the family court division and the loss was in the many thousands.
Police Sgt. Ivan Valencia said the two cases developed by coincidence and the suspects were not working together.
"Both similar operations," Valencia said. "One was accepting court filing fees downtown and when they paid in cash she would mark paid, but then voided it from her cash register. The second person at traffic court would be taking citation fees and cash and not be putting it in his register."
Lesko was taken into custody late Thursday afternoon and bailed out of jail late that night. Rios' custody situation wasn't clear on Friday.
