The Bay Bridge will be closed to traffic from August 28 through September 3 and officials are advising travelers to prepare for delays and make plans accordingly.
Bay Bridge officials say the closure will start Wednesday night with rolling traffic breaks. Work will then commence to connect the new eastern span.
The CHP will help direct traffic and travelers are advised to pay attention to signs. The Bay Bridge should be reopened by 5 a.m. Tuesday September 3rd and will include a bike and pedestrian path, although not all the way to the island as originally planned.
The federal government approved the temporary fix and repairs on cracked steel bolts continue but officials say the new bridge is still much safer the the old one.
While the bridge is closed BART will operate 24-hour train service. In addition, drivers can use the Golden Gate and San Mateo Bridges.
Volume on the open bridges could be up almost 25 percent by some transit estimates.
