ELK GROVE, CA - Elk Grove opened its first transitional home in Old Town Elk Grove Saturday morning.

The Grace House is designed to help the city's homeless get back on their feet. It will be operated by Sacramento Self-Help Housing, a non-profit organization that works to improve the living conditions and increase self-sufficiency of people living at or below poverty level.

Volunteers have been working since October 2012 to rehabilitate the run-down property at 9112 Jonell Court.

"More than 100 volunteers have teamed up, shared resources and chipped in to ensure Elk Grove residents who are down on their luck now have a supportive and successful haven to get their lives back on track," Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis said.

The city brought the home through its housing program. The house is 2,200 square feet with five bedrooms and three bathrooms.
