ROCKLIN, CA - Federal authorities released new information about a Rocklin doctor and wife team accused of performing botched plastic surgeries.
An investigation, headed by the California Medical Board, shows there are dozens of other victims who allege Dr. Efrain Gonzalez damaged their bodies in plastic surgeries gone wrong at Advanced Medical Spa.
Police arrested Dr. Gonzalez and his wife Dr. Yessenia Candelaria last week.
Candelaria administered anesthesia to patients, but federal documents show it didn't stop there.
According to a DEA search warrant application, the Medical Board of California identified Candelaria as "self-abusing a controlled substance and diverting a controlled substance from a patient undergoing surgery."
Documents also said, "Dr. Candelaria was administering anesthesia (believed to be Demerol) intravenously to a patient in the operating room while simultaneously administering the drug to herself via an additional intravenous line." A medical assistant also in the room at the time, said Candelaria then passed out.
Demerol is considered to be a highly addictive narcotic.
The medical board's investigation also revealed Gonzalez ordered and prescribed drugs to his wife.
Gonzalez spoke to News 10 in 2011 after a woman claimed he botched her breast implant surgery. At that time, Gonzales defended his work.
"Any surgeon is going to have patients who are unhappy," Gonzalez said. "You can't hit a home run every time you go to bat."
Carolyn McCluhan, one of the women suing Gonzalez for malpractice after a botched breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and facial fat transfer, said she believes Candelaria is just as culpable as her husband.
"I know the hell every night," McCluhan said. "I know the pain I live in everyday."
The documents also show that both Gonzalez and his wife gave a bottle of Demerol to a patient, who was in pain, and showed her boyfriend how to inject it into her.
The DEA seized numerous documents from their home and office, including their medication and narcotics logs.
