AUBURN, CA - Even after crashing his car, Keith Smith continued to try run from officers late Thursday night, Auburn police said.

An officer tried to pull over the 56-year-old Smith near Lincoln Way and Cleveland Avenue, but Smith did not stop and led the officer on a brief chase, Sgt. Michael Garlock said.

The chase ended when Smith drove off the road and crashed into a fence near Placer High School. Garlock said Smith then got out of his car and ran away from the crash.

The officer ran after Smith, who resisted and was eventually subdued by Taser, Garlock said. Smith was then taken into custody.

Garlock said officers found that Smith was driving with a suspended license and was also under the influence of meth.

Smith was booked into Placer County Jail for evading a police officer and other violations. His bail was set at $50,000.
