STOCKTON, CA - Members of the San Joaquin County Gang Task Force shot and killed a man in a stolen vehicle Saturday night after he allegedly tried to hit officers with the vehicle he was driving.
San Joaquin County sheriff's Deputy Les Garcia said at 9 p.m., task force officers conducted a traffic stop on the 200 block of S. Adelbert Avenue on a vehicle matching the description from an armed robbery that occurred the day before on the 100 block of S. Cardinal Avenue.
In that crime, the alleged robbers suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in a silver Mercedes sedan with paper license plates. The Mercedes was reported stolen out of Roseville on Nov. 5, 2012, Garcia said.
As officers approached the driver of car in question, Garcia said the driver put the car in reverse and accelerated toward the officers. One officer fell to the ground and both officers drew their weapons and shot the driver to eliminate the threat, Garcia said.
Garcia said the driver was shot and removed from the vehicle. Officers reported finding a loaded handgun in his waistband.
The man was transported to an area hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.
Monday, authorities released the man's name. He was 33-year-old Gary Allen Hawkins of Stockton.
A San Joaquin County sheriff's deputy and Stockton police officer were involved in the shooting and were not injured. They were be placed on a three-day administrative leave that is procedure in a critical incident.
A multi-agency protocol investigation was ongoing.
