FAIR OAKS, CA - A teenage boy was cited for bringing a gun to school Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said.
The 16-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg on his way to Bella Vista High School, at 8301 Madison Avenue, Deputy Jason Ramos said.
The sheriff's department received a call from the high school around 9 a.m. saying they detained a student who brought a loaded gun to school.
Ramos said deputies recovered the gun from the student and cited him with a felony charge. The teen was then released into his father's custody to get treatment for his non-life threatening injury.
It's unclear how the student got a hold of the gun, Ramos said.
