ROSEVILLE, CA - The parents of a Roseville teen helped police catch a child predator suspect.
The parents found inappropriate text messages of a sexual nature on their son's cellphone which included plans for an overnight stay at a hotel, said Roseville police Officer Dee Dee Gunther. The parents went to the planned rendezvous Sept. 29 and confronted Robert George Schmidt who drove away, Gunther said.
Detectives launched an investigation, Gunther said, learning the suspect and teen had met online in January and had a relationship via text messages to each other. Tuesday, detectives went to Lake County to arrest Schmidt, 33, on suspicion of meeting a minor for sexual purposes and related charges.
Schmidt was booked into Placer County Jail on 400,000 bail.
