SACRAMENTO - An iPhone app helped Sacramento police capture a suspected purse snatcher on Friday morning.

According to Sergeant Andrew Pettit of the Sacramento Police Department, a woman was at Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln when a man grabbed her purse and ran. The woman chased the man into the casino parking lot where she saw him get into a car and drive away.

Realizing her iPhone, equipped with a GPS tracking app, was inside the purse, the woman activated the app and notified police, said Pettit.

Police were then able to locate the driver on eastbound I-80 at Greenback Ln. and a pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, the fleeing driver reached speeds as high as 100 mph and drove with and against the flow of traffic, said Pettit.

The driver finally pulled over at the Riverside Ave. offramp and fled on foot. In response, police released a K9 officer which caught up to the suspected robber and bit him. The man gave up without further incident and was taken to hospital for treatment of the dog bite, Pettit said.
