SACRAMENTO, CA - Many Sacramento Kings season ticket holders were surprised to receive a personal call from the Maloofs Monday.
Just days after the arena deal plan collapsed and just 24 hours after a big win by the Kings against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Maloofs were working the phones.
A number of season ticket holders said they were contacted by either Gavin or Joe Maloof throughout the day.
The Kings organization on Tuesday said Gavin Maloff made roughly 60 calls and either convinced or learned four in five season ticket holders planned to continue to buy season tickets.
"When he called me, it was pretty unbelievable," said Gurjeet Singh, who received a call around noon.
Singh was one of those who had no plans to renew his season tickets. He said the call from Gavin Maloof did not change his mind either, but Singh appreciated the five-minute phone call and the explanation Gavin gave about why the deal didn't work for the Maloofs.
"He thought the projections were too high and for them to reach those projections, ticket sales would have to increase 60 percent," Singh said.
Michael Costello received a call from Gavin Maloof around 4 p.m. Monday.
"The fact they are responding the way they are, I'm guessing there are a landslide of cancellations," Costello said.
Costello emailed his representative last Friday to cancel his season tickets. He believed that was the best way to send a message to the Kings' owners.
"I just decided I'm done. I'm not going to spend anymore money there," Costello said.
Costello guessed the Maloofs made about 100 or 200 calls on Monday to season ticket holders, trying to reassure fans of the Maloofs' commitment to the community and the excitement for the team.
"I think it's too little too late," Costello said. "I think the graceful thing to do is to sell the team and get behind the long-term potential owner of a new group doing something good."
The Kings organization said Tuesday it has had just six season ticket holder cancellations. They said before last Friday's arena deal-breaking decision that the renewal rate was about 88 percent.
