GALT, CA - Cleanup crews worked through the early morning hours to clear groceries and debris from a fatal big rig crash on I-5.

The crash happened around 1:15am when a truck driver was heading northbound on I-5. CHP officers say for unknown reasons, the driver veered across the median, crossed over the southbound lanes, and slammed into the Dierssen Road bridge overpass. The upper half of the truck was sheered in half. The 51-year-old driver, from Lodi, was killed instantly.

The driver was hauling groceries to Redding. The impact of the crash sent groceries flying all over the freeway and onto the bridge overhead.

A 15 year veteran of California Highway Patrol says the impact of the crash is unlike anything he has ever seen.

The crash left one lane of I-5 closed for hours Thursday.
