WILTON, CA - A Wilton rancher believes a mountain lion was responsible for an attack on his sheep Sunday night but a game warden thinks it was a coyote.

Dan Foster, whose property is on the 11100 block of Walmort Road, said he found two of his sheep with their necks snapped, which is more consistent with a big cat going after prey. Coyotes and dogs attack the hind legs.

"I am afraid with the small children going to the bus stop in the morning and adults taking their trash out at night, next time there could be a human attack," Foster said.

Foster said the animal ate about 50 pounds of meat.

Monday afternoon, a warden with the state Department of Fish and Game investigated and believes the attack may have been a coyote but a Dec. 23 attack on Foster's herd sounded like a mountain lion. In that instance, eight of Foster's sheep were killed.
