A report of flames at the two-story structure at 744 Empire Street came in at 6:50 p.m., said Fairfield Fire Chief Vince Webster.

When crews arrived Friday night, there was smoke throughout the building.

Webster said no one was inside the building.

Fire Capt. Bob Stoffel said due to the rapid spread of the flames, the fire was upgraded to a 5th alarm for more aid. About 50 firefighters were on the scene.

Webster says there were several businesses, including non-profits such as the American Cancer Society, in the building and they have sustained serious damage. He said it was likely the building will be destroyed.

No one was injured.

At the time of this post Saturday, investigators were checking for structure integrity and then the place of origin of the fire.

Preliminary reports show no evidence of arson.
