GALT, CA - Two men were killed and Galt authorities were searching for an alleged gang member after a fight during a Galt family celebration ended in gunfire, Galt's police chief said.
Investigators said Alfredo Daniel Tafoya of south Sacramento was the man who pulled a gun and opened fire during a quinceanera party in the Estrellita Ballroom at 415 C Street in Galt just after 11 p.m. Saturday night, Galt Police Chief Loren Cattolico said.
Efraim Zambrano, 20, and Carlos Montes, 24, suffered gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene after getting into a physical altercation with Tafoya.
"At this point, it's too soon to tell what sparked the altercation," Cattolico said.
The shooting happened in the crowded ballroom not far off the main floor where dozens of partygoers were enjoying the event.
"It's a miracle that nobody else was hit," Cattolico said.
Cattolico said Tafoya was not an invited guest to the party, but was allowed in. Tafoya, 18, is a known member of the Sureno street gang who had a previous arrest in Sacramento County, Cattolico said.
The relationship between Tafoya and the victims was not immediately known. Cattolico said Zambrano and Mondez were guests at the quinceanera and had no known gang affiliations.
Tafoya was described at 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.
Anyone with information on Tafoya's whereabouts was asked to call the Galt Police Department at 209-366-7000.
