SACRAMENTO, CA - As Sacramento works toward development of "The Railyards" project, redevelopment of another historic site stands as a symbol of how the city is trying to stay connected to the past.
The former Globe Mills at 1131 C Street has been transformed into an award-winning affordable senior housing and loft housing community.
Architect Michael Malinowski told News10, "The confluence of old to new, silo to residential is unique. I don't think there's anything like this in United States, and it's right here in Sacramento."
The mill was first developed in the early 1900s and made Sacramento grain central of the Central Valley. It was shut down in the 1960s, and a major fire in the mid 1990s nearly spelled the end for the historic structure.
Instead, the mill became a key $38-million infill project considered by some to be a gateway to Sacramento's central city and downtown.
Malinowski gave News10's Jennifer Smith a tour. "We've saved as much as we could as a reminder that the place wasn't built as a housing project it was converted to become,"Malinowski said.
Malinowski says he feels a strong connection to the project. "It's always been a central part of Sacramento, as a grain facility, and as ruins, too, it became an icon of a different sort. I think it's an icon again. An icon of optimism and hope. This place has captured people's imagination and spirit for 100 years and I think it will continue to do that in the future."
