SACRAMENTO, CA - A man and woman were arrested on child endangerment charges after authorities found their 21-month-old boy living in a filthy apartment Thursday.
Sacramento Police Department spokesman Norm Leong said fire dispatch contacted them around 6 p.m. about a small kitchen fire in an apartment complex unit located on the 7900 block of La Riviera Drive.
Responding officers found the child living in uninhabitable conditions with clothes all over the floor, food and garbage in the rooms and a broken toilet, said Leong.
"When our officers responded they found a house that was very dirty. Used sanitary pads, used diapers and what not kept on the floor, a bathroom that didn't work and marijuana within reach of the child," said Leong.
Sarah Krtil, 24, the child's mother, was home at the time, and told officers the fire started after she forgot about food she was cooking on the stove. Officials contacted the child's father, Chris Guerrero, 32, at his job.
Leong said both parents were arrested for endangering their son due to the living conditions and house fire. The child was placed into protective custody.
Krtil has since been released from the Sacramento County jail but Guerrero remains in custody on $50,000 bail.
