FARMINGTON, CA - A barn fire in Farmington that destroyed thousands of dollars worth of hay early Wednesday was expected to continue burning for several days, according to San Joaquin County fire officials.
The blaze broke out at the Temple Creek dairy farm barn around 5 a.m. Wednesday near Carter Road in Farmington in San Joaquin County, Farmington Fire Department spokesman Jeff Briggs said.
The fire quickly enveloped hay bales stacked up to 50 feet high in the massive structure. Crews from several area agencies, including Escalon, Oakdale and Linden, joined the fight to put down the flames. Smoke from the blaze was visible for miles.
About $240,000 worth of hay was lost in addition to the $100,000 barn. With more hay bales inside, the fire was expected to burn for a while, Briggs said.
"At this point, it will take two or three days to burn out. With the weather changing and winds picking up, we have to make sure nothing else catches fire," Briggs said.
Briggs said fire officials were confident of the cause of the blaze.
"A fire like this probably started from spontaneous combustion. Water gets in the hay and starts to heat up and decompose and that can cause a fire. It started naturally," said Briggs.
