SACRAMENTO, CA -- Two people died Thursday morning after a driver plowed into a construction zone at high speeds in a Sacramento intersection.
Officials said Nancy Richards, 26, was driving a blue Pontiac G6 when she hit and killed Arnoldo Placensia, 49, who worked for Ahlstrom Construction at the intersection of Marconi and Howe avenues around 1:20 a.m.
Richards then collided with a truck holding a generator used for powering construction equipment. She was also killed.
Officials said Richards may have been under the influence at the time. Officials were awaiting a toxicology report from the coroners office to confirm.
One other Ahlstrom worker sustained superficial injuries during the collision, but did not need medical assistance. The crew was repairing potholes when the collision happened.
Officials want to remind drivers that overnight construction becomes more common during the summer season. It's important for drivers to "slow for the cone zone," and reduce speeds in these construction areas.
Caltrans says the overnight hours are the most deadly for workers.
