SAN FRANCISCO, CA - A Roseville man attending a San Francisco 49ers pre-season game at Candlestick Park was killed Friday evening after he was struck by a frightened police horse, according to San Francisco police.

Eugene Caldwell, 78, died at San Francisco General Hospital early Saturday morning, nearly seven hours after the accident.

The police horse named Seattle was allegedly spooked after a plastic bag became stuck in the horse's bridle, causing the animal to toss his rider and start running through the stadium's charter bus parking lot.

Police said Caldwell hit his head after being knocked down, causing major head injuries.

The 11-year-old male horse was one of two police horses in the parking lot to prevent auto burglaries during Friday night's game between the San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers.

The accident is under investigation.
