STOCKTON, CA - Animal rights protesters, including a topless woman, took their message to downtown Stockton Wednesday.
They group members from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) were protesting circus events coming to the Stockton Arena in mid-September.
One of the protesters was topless with simulated scars on her back and chains at her feet. She sat on the ground, with one arm draped across her chest.
"The wounds on her back represent the wounds that animals receive in the circus. They're kept in small and filthy conditions, cramped, and often tied by chains for the majority of their lives," PETA spokeswoman Amanda Fortino said.
The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus is scheduled to perform at the Stockton Arena Sept. 16-19. The organization's website stresses the care and comfort provided to its animals.
