MODESTO, CA - Students at Modesto High School were expected to participate in a walkout Monday in support of teachers facing layoffs.
Instead, students stayed in class after being convinced by student leaders they could show their support in a different way.
"If we really want to support our teachers, the best way to do that is stay in class and wear pink to support those who were pink-slipped. It defeats the purpose of wanting to support teachers by walking out in the middle of a lesson," said student body president Rosa Stanley.
An estimated 30 teachers and counselors at Modesto have been notified they'll lose work because of state budget problems. Districtwide, the number of threatened teachers is nearly 400.
There was a lunchtime student rally Monday in protest over the potential layoffs at another Modesto school, Enochs High School.
