FOLSOM, CA - A mother and her two daughters barely escaped an oncoming light rail train when their car got stuck on the railroad tracks, according to officials.
The unidentifed mother was driving northbound on Folsom Boulevard near Iron Point Road around 7:15 p.m. when she fell asleep at the wheel, according to Folsom police spokesman Lt. Perry Albers.
Her car veered off the road and landed on some nearby railroad tracks where it got stuck. Albers said several bystanders helped her and her two daughters, ages 7 and 10, safely out of the car.
Several minutes later, a Regional Transit light rail train smashed into the car on the tracks, unable to stop in time, according to Albers. There were five people onboard the train and none were injured in the crash.
"The driver and her children are very fortunate passersby stopped to lend aid," Albers said. "Had she and her children remained in the vehicle the outcome could have been much more tragic."
The passenger side of the vehicle sustained major damage and was eventually towed away, said Albers.
