SACRAMENTO, CA - With the adoption of Haitian orphans making headlines, local adoption agencies say the situation in earthquake-ravaged Haiti is an opportunity to remind people of the need for adoption here at home.
Sara Hanson, of Sierra Forever Families, says there are some 2,000 children living in foster care in Sacramento who want a permanent home.
"You can do an independent or foreign adoption facilitated by a lawyer, which can be expensive, from $5,000 to over $25,000," said Hanson. "But you have the opportunity to sort of hand-pick and determine exactly what you are looking for in a child."
Hanson said in comparison, foster adoption is virtually free, and usually has far fewer restrictions.
"You can be an individual. You don't have to be married, a family who has already raised children and now empty nesters, or you can be a same-sex couple," she said.
Sierra Forever Families is dedicated to placing foster children in permanent homes. Each month the agency holds an Exploring Foster Care Adoption orientations in Sacramento, Nevada City and Auburn. You can learn more by calling (916) 368-5114 or online at Sierra Forever Families.
