SACRAMENTO INT'L AIRPORT, CA - So far, so good for the start of one of the busiest travel days of the year.
News10 was the only Sacramento TV station inside the Sacramento International Airport Wednesday morning as travelers arrived to start their holiday getaways. Live via Skype, News10's Tish Palamidessi reported most people were in high spirits as they headed to their departure gates throughout Terminal A.
As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, there were no significant delays or cancellations. In fact, some flights out of Chicago were arriving early.
One of the Busiest Travel Days of the Year
AAA predicts a 9 percent increase in travel by car this year in California.
Drivers will travel an average of 664 miles over the four-day holiday weekend, paying as much as 11 percent less for a motel room than a year ago and 17 cents less for a gallon of gas than around Labor Day.
CHP: Maximum Enforcement
The California Highway Patrol is out in force this holiday looking for speeding drivers, drunk drivers, seat belt violators and those talking on cell phones while driving.
The maximum enforcement period begins Wednesday at 6 p.m. The CHP says this is one of the deadliest times on California highways. During last year's Thanksgiving holiday, 33 people were killed on state roads patrolled by CHP units. Most were not wearing seatbelts. The maximum enforcement period runs through midnight on Sunday.
Tipsy Tow Available
AAA's Tipsy Tow program offers a free tow for drinking drivers in Northern California from 6 p.m. Thursday untill 6 a.m. Friday. You do not have to be a AAA member to take advantage of this service. Call toll-free (800) 222-4357 for a free tow up to five miles.
