SACRAMENTO, CA - The Sutter County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday that it had consulted with medical examiners and forensic pathologists and now believes that the human leg found Sunday at a Sacramento River beach was part of a medical procedure.
In a news release, Sutter County officials said that several indicators led them to believe that the severed leg was excised as part of a medical procedure.
The statement said that hospitals retain pathological specimens in a frozen state for up to six months before disposal.
However, sheriff's detectives have checked with hospitals and surgical centers in the Yuba-Sutter area without any results.
The detectives will be expanding their inquiry to include hospitals througout the valley to see if any such procedures have been performed.
Sunday afternoon, Sutter County deputies were called out to an area known as "Beer Can Beach" for a report that someone had come upon human remains.
Paintballers in the area were along that stretch of the Feather River, saw the leg, and then called the sheriff's department.
Monday, cadaver dogs and search teams combed the area looking for any signs of more body parts but nothing was found.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Sutter County Sheriff's Department at (530) 822-7307.
