SACRAMENTO, CA - The White House has launched a campaign to improve math and science education in the United States and that is good news for a Sacramento school.
The School of Engineering and Sciences is part of the Sacramento City Unified School District's new approach to education. It is a small, theme-oriented working to prepare students in grades 7 through 12 for degrees in engineering and science.
Principal Belinda Kirk told News10, "Science and engineering has to come alive in all content areas, such as English, math and science. How do you ingrain math and science in those particular courses?"
To do that, the engineering and sciences school has developed strong partnerships with local professionals, colleges and organizations to give students a hands-on approach to learning.
Engineering and math teacher Neil Lum says students are excited to actually get a feel for what an engineer might do.
"I taught them the basics of circuit boards. They soldered and created their own circuit boards," said Lum.
School administrators and teachers told News10 the integrative approach, along with strong support from parents and the community, has helped raise the latest API, Academic Performance Index, from 779 to 817, which is beyond the state target of 800.
Kirk says there's still work to be done, but she's encouraged and enthusiastic about President Obama's new education initiative.
