SACRAMENTO, CA - A Cameron Park family got a new start this week, thanks to the generosity of talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
Cheryl Groves told News10 she's been an "Ellen" fan from day one, and when their life started to fall apart, she decided to send a letter to Ellen to ask for help as part of Ellen's November Giveaway Days.
The letter recounted how Cheryl's husband Steve lost his job, how the family fell behind in their mortgage payments, and how the credit card debt piled up.
"It wasn't the easiest thing to let it all out for the world to know, but we needed the help and I thought, 'I'm going to give it a shot and see what happens,'" Groves said.
On Tuesday night, the phone rang. On the line was DeGeneres from the set of her show.
After a knock at the door, "Ellen" crew members handed the stunned Groves thousands of dollars to cover their mortgage payments and credit card debt.
Already overcome with joy, a tearful Cheryl then received another surprise -- the keys to a fully-loaded 2010 GMC Terrain.
"It's just the most amazing gift that's ever been given. I'm just so thankful to Ellen and all of her sponsors for making our dreams come true," Groves said.
