RIO LINDA, CA - After a huge turnout Monday, Sacramento County healthcare workers hoped for a smooth afternoon for its second public H1N1 vaccination clinic Tuesday.

By early Tuesday morning, lines were already forming at Rio Linda High School, located at 6309 Dry Creek Road, for the 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. clinic.  Just before 6 p.m. Sacramento County officials shut the line down because they reached their shot capacity.

At the county's first public clinic at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento Monday, about 5,000 people showed up, but there were only enough doses to vaccinate about 2,000.

"As people become more comfortable with the tasks we've given them, the process will go smoother and smoother each day," said Dr. Glennah Trochet with the County Public Health Department.

But Trochet also pointed out that their clinics should be utilized by people who have no other way of getting the vaccine. "We are the safety net," she said. "These vaccinations are for people who can't get vaccinations any other way."

Sacramento County Health Department spokesperson Kerry Shearer said the first several clinics will be for the high-risk priority groups.  The county will open up vaccinations to everyone sometime in Late November or December.

Among the priority groups for the vaccine are:

  • Pregnant women
  • Healthcare workers
  • Persons caring for children under six months of age
  • Kids and adults ages six months to 24 years
  • Adults ages 24-64 with underlying medical conditions

The line outside the Rio Linda High School football stadium started at 7:00 a.m., eight hours before the shots were to be administered.

Julia Seebach said she was waiting for a second straight day after spending 90 minutes in line Monday only to be turned away.

"I really want to get the vaccine because I'm pregnant and I'm with Kaiser and they only have the mist and I can't take that," said the soon-to-be mother. "Sure, it's frustrating, but we're all in here together, so this is just what we have to do. It's unfortunate, but we're lucky to have this at all."

Father Ty Yancey was first in line, and waited all day by himself before his two young boys arrived. "It's what a good parent does," he said. "Whatever it takes."

However, Yancey was a little let down after his sons only received a portion of their vaccinations.  Both are under ten and can only take the vaccine in half doses.

"A little bit of a letdown because I didn't realize that kids under 10 had to come back to get a second vaccination," he said.
