SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA -- Several hundred people in line at Sacramento County's first free public H1N1 flu vaccination clinic were turned away before the doors even opened Monday as the 2,000 alloted vaccinations were quickly snapped up.
Long lines were in place even before the first clinic opened at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Hiram Johnson High School.
The line started forming at 7:45 a.m. as Madeline Rubenstein of Sacramento became the first in line, holding a spot for her 5-year-old asthmatic son.
"I'm a stay-at-home mom and this is what a stay-at-home mom does, in my opinion, when your son has asthma and needs the H1N1 vaccine," said Rubenstein.
People waiting in line were given a number in the order that they showed up for the shot. Everyone is being asked if they are in a high priority group by health officials, who are taking the word of the individual requesting the shot.
But by 3:00 p.m., the line had already swelled well beyond the 2,000 doses given to the clinic and officials were forced to begin turning people away.
"I was hoping there might be a miracle and there might be extra shots for me and my kids but it looks like i'll have to go to another clinic," said Elk Grove Parent, Dawn Reilly.
Administrators said those who weren't vaccinated at Monday's clinic should return to one of the other 22 free vaccination clinics scheduled across Sacramento County through December.
Among the priority groups for the vaccine were:
- Pregnant women
- Healthcare workers
- Persons caring for children under six months of age
- Kids and adults ages six months to 24 years
- Adults ages 24-64 with underlying medical conditions
