SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A new poll shows Californians are worried about higher education funding cuts they fear qualified people won't get to college.

Public Policy Institute of California report on a telephone survey of about 2,500 people finds half of parents with children 18 or under are very worried about being able to afford a college education for their children.

Sixty-five percent think its harder now than 10 years ago to get a college degree and 68 percent say qualified people don't have an opportunity to go to college.

Institute chief Mark Baldassare says the level of concern is surprising.

Higher education took a big budget hit this year in Sacramento.

At the 10-campus University of California system, faculty members are being put on furloughs. Fees were hiked once in May and could increase another 32 percent over the next two years.

California State University, the nation's largest public university system, is cutting enrollment and raising fees.
