SACRAMENTO, CA -- There are more signs of progress at the downtown Sacramento Railyards. Work is underway on six of the historic central shops buildings and Tuesday the developers offered an inside look at the progress.
Thomas Enterprises, Inc. and the California Pollution Control Financing Authority offered tours to the media, providing a rare peek inside some of the buildings that will be revamped.
Tuesday begins the first phase of rehabilitation to the "Central Shops" building. Leslie Valpey of Thomas Enterprises, Inc. said more than 50 workers will begin removing asbestos and lead paint, working through decades of environmental damage to the buildings.
The funding for that portion of the project is being provided by the California Pollution Control Financing Authority, paid through Proposition 1-C.
This phase is the fourth infrastructure project to break ground at the Railyards this year. The full project encompasses 244 acres, located at the former Union Pacific Railyard in downtown Sacramento.
Valpey said it's the largest urban infill project in the country.
