AUBURN, CA - City Council members are eying new regulations on some aggressive dog breeds following last September's attack of a teenager by four pit bulls.

Monday night pit bull owners packed Monday's city council meeting concerned the city would try to ban the breed outright.

Becky Haupt sat in the meeting with a photo of her pit bull Casper who passed away recently at age 13.

"He was a kind, sweet dog," said Haupt.

But not all pit bulls are so nice. In September, a teenager had to have 40 stitches after being attacked by a pit bull in downtown Auburn.

"It's the responsibility of the owners to control their dogs but not everyone wants to do that and many pit bulls are raised to fight," said Auburn City Councilman, Keith Nesbitt.

California law prevents cities from banning dog breeds. But Auburn may consider requiring pit bull owners to spay and neuter their dogs. There could also be restrictions on how many dogs people could own.

The council did not make a final decision on the matter at Monday night's meeting. They will take up the matter again in a few months.
