SACRAMENTO, CA - A 36-year-old woman was killed Saturday morning after she was hit several times while attempting to retrieve some boxes that had fallen from her car on Interstate 80 south of Watt Avenue, according to officials.
California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lizz Dutton said around 6 a.m. the unidentified woman was riding in a pickup truck with her male friend when several boxes filled with clothing fell from their vehicle into the slow lane on eastbound Interstate 80.
Dutton said they pulled their car to the right shoulder and got out of the car. The woman attempted to retrieve the boxes on the freeway when she was hit by an approaching car that did not see her in the road. The force of impact threw the woman into the middle lane where she was hit several more times by other oncoming vehicles, said Dutton.
At least one of those drivers stopped and returned to the scene to help. Dutton said the woman suffered severe injuries and died at the scene. Her male friend was not hit or injured.
Both lanes remained shut down for cleanup. CHP officials were expected to reopen all lanes by 9:30 a.m.
