SACRAMENTO, CA - Sheriff's deputies shot and killed two pit bulls near Whitney Elementary School on Friday afternoon after receiving reports the dogs bit some people, according to Sacramento County Animal Control spokesperson Chris Andis.
The elementary school was locked down for 45 minutes as a precaution, according to school officials.
Animal control officers say at least two, possibly three people suffered bites, described as moderate to severe.
The dogs were shot and killed in order to protect the public, Andis said.
The dogs, which had no identification, will undergo tests to determine whether they have rabies.
Michael Peart, one of the victims, said he was bitten on the left ankle, and said the dogs, "came right across the street, and I just stood, froze, but they didn't even back off. "
He said the smaller of the two dogs bit him.
Peart said then, "The bigger dog started to jump towards me and I had a shovel in my hand and I swung the shovel at the bigger dog.
"I'm going to have to go to the hospital to get some shots. Hopefully, they don't have rabies."
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says Friday marked the second and third time in three days that a county law enforcement official had to shoot and kill a dog in the open. The first case happened on Wednesday when a deputy was attacked by a labrador in south Sacramento County.
