ROSEVILLE, CA - A local homeless shelter offers a place to stay, counseling, and many other services to those without a place to call home. Recently, The Gathering Inn has struggled to keep their doors open to serve people in Placer County. But now, it's seeing more homeless come from Sacramento.
"We've been overwhelmed by the numbers," said Suzi deFosset, the shelter's executive director. "About 30 percent of our population is coming from out of Sacramento. That means that people in this county have to wait in line to get services that were previously available to them."
One homeless Sacramento woman said she came to the Roseville facility because it's a lot harder to get into the Sacramento area shelters. She said she thinks the resources are better in Roseville or Placer County.
This, despite the fact that more public assistance dollars are dedicated to the homeless in Sacramento County than in Placer County. The Department of Human Assistance said an indigent person can qualify for up to $255 a month in Sacramento County. Compare that to a maximum of $220 a month for an indigent in Placer County.
Meanwhile, Sacramento County representatives said they've had to scale back services because of budget cuts.
The Gathering Inn works with a number of local churches in Roseville to provide up to 60 beds a night for the homeless.
The shelter will host its yearly fundraiser, Splendor of Trees, on Nov. 14.
