SACRAMENTO, CA -- Seventy-six county workers, more than half of them in Child Protective Services will be laid off, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday afternoon.

Faced with a multi-million dollar budget shortfall, supervisors voted to eliminate 89 county positions, 76 which are currently filled.

Others to be laid off include employees with General Services, Department of Human Assistance, and Neighborhood Services.

The layoffs will take effect November 8. The board also says that Senior Nutrition Services may be impacted including the "Meals on Wheels" program. Another meeting to further discuss the senior programs will be held December 1.

The board voted unanimously down a controversial plan to reduce employee work hours. In lieu of approving the plan, the board accepted contract concessions with some unions. The plan would have impacted 7000 full-time employees, cutting back hours so they'd lose 2 days of pay a month.

"It is a backdoor furlough, " said Ted Somera with United Public Employees Local 1. "What they're asking the union to do is to fund the general fund $4 to $6 million they're short."

Now, the Board of Supervisors hopes to make up that difference with layoffs and cutbacks in programs.
