SACRAMENTO, CA - As family members of a slain store clerk gathered inside, customers outside of MC Discount Liquor and Mini Mart talked about the loss of a man simply trying to pursue the American Dream.

"He was pleasant when I came into their store, smiling constantly, and I'm very sorry this happened," said Tammy Riffy, a regular customer.

The slain clerk has been identified as Ravinder Singh Banga, 44, who moved here four months ago from India with his wife and two children.

"All over the world from every country everybody thinks that if he can come to America it's better," said Makhan Singh, co-owner of the mini mart.

Sheriff's investigators said a gunman walked into the store Monday night with the intention of committing a robbery. Surveillance video shows Banga resisted the robbery attempt and the gunman shot and killed him.

"It's a personal choice for everybody whether or not to resist or give up the money, but like I said, statistics show us that when people comply with the demands of the suspect, they usually survive the incident," said Sergeant Tim Curran.

No suspect has been arrested in the shooting death. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department at (916) 443-HELP.
