SACRAMENTO, CA - With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Wednesday's Live_Online at 11 a.m. featured a breast cancer nurse who will answer your questions about the disease, talk about treatment options and ways you can lower your risk.

Mary Pare, from the Sutter Cancer Center in Sacramento, was our guest. She's known as a breast cancer navigator and helps patients with information on their diagnosis, treatment and recovery, and even helps them navigate through the insurance process.

Sacramento's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, takes place on Sunday at the West Steps of the State Capitol. Since the first walk in Sacramento in 1997, the walk has raised more than $6.5 million for the fight against breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society offers the following information:

Breast cancer can be successfully treated if found early.

All women should follow the American Cancer Society's recommended screening guidelines, which include recommendations for women at high risk, such as those with a personal or family history or genetic tendency.

Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health.

Clinical breast exams should be part of a periodic health exam, about every three years for women in their 20s and 30s, and every year for women 40 and older.

Women should know how their breasts normally feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care providers. Breast self-exam is an option for women starting in their 20s.

Women at increased risk (e.g., family history, genetic tendency, past breast cancer) should talk with their doctors about the benefits and limitations of starting mammography screening earlier and of having additional tests (i.e., breast ultrasound and MRI).
