SOLANO COUNTY, CA - A Vacaville couple is facing charges of felony child endangerment in connection with the accidental shooting death of their toddler daughter by their 8-year-old son last month.
The Solano County District Attorney's Office filed two felony child abuse or neglect counts each against Daniela Shanahan, 26, and Michael Shanahan, 28, for the Sept. 23 incident that killed their 2-year-old daughter Ayana. The criminal complaint also alleges first degree criminal storage of a firearm accessible to a child against the parents.
The couple was arrested and booked into Solano County Jail Monday.
Vacaville police investigators say the couple's son and daughter were left unsupervised in their parents' bedroom with a loaded firearm on the bed. The boy starting playing with the weapon and it discharged, fatally striking his 2-year-old stepsister. The boy remains in child protective services.
The district attorney's office also charged Daniela Shanahan with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The Shanahans posted bail and have been released from custody.
According to Solano County Superior Court, there is no court hearing scheduled for the Shanahans at this time.
