ELVERTA, CA - Almost 1,000 Golden Retrievers will arrive on the doorstep of a special sactuary in Elverta this year. Many are refugees from the foreclosure crisis and some are too old or too sick to be adopted out.
Homeward Bound takes all of them in and an army of volunteers sees to their basic needs.
The sanctuary was the dream of Mike and Jody Jones. The couple runs Homeward Bound 365 days a year and have earned a special place in the hearts of thousands of dog lovers, including Geoff and Anne-Marie Petrie.
"The fact that it's a sanctuary means a lot to me," said Anne-Marie. "They take dogs in and adopt as many as they can, but the ones that are so broken and sick...they get to live their lives. It is very special and the people who work there feel special."
Geoff Petrie may be better known as the Kings President of Basketball Operations, but at home, he enjoys spending time with his three Goldens Romeo, Abigale and Zack.
The couple has adopted several dogs from Homeward Bound and remain among the sanctuary's strongest supporters.
"Its just a great organization," Geoff Petrie said. "Right now, they have so many dogs. There are always dogs out there to look at and there is always one that will catch your eye."
Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary will host an event Saturday to show off some of the dogs and raise money to pay the thousands of dollars in vet and care costs. You can read more about the "Kibble & Bids" here.
