MODESTO, CA - Thousands of pounds of golf gear donated for troops in Iraq have finally arrived.
News10 has been telling the story of a Modesto man who wanted to collect golf equipment for his son and his army buddies for more than a year.
"What they want to do is open up driving ranges throughout the area. Everybody's going to have a club and all the balls they want to mess with. They go on their tours and whatever they do, they can take their frustrations out," said Bob Davidson when he started the campaign called Operation Driving Range.
But Davidson soon found out that collecting golf equipment and sending it overseas were two entirely different tasks. The U.S. Army wouldn't pay for the shipment, and the commercial costs were so high, that equipment sat for months in a Modesto-area warehouse.
"I'd been in the Navy for 6 years. Don't know about the Army. I'm completely at a loss," said Davidson told News10 last winter.
Finally a few months ago, two companies stepped forward and picked up the costs and the gear is now in the hands of men and women stationed in Iraq.
Those companies are Delta Horseshoes and EMO Trans, and although Davidson's son came home long before the equipment arrived, he doesn't mind.
"To open up a crate and see the clubs, stuff from the U.S. They know we care," said a very pleased Davidson.
