WATERFORD, CA - Officials recovered the body of a female driver who crashed into the city of Waterford's sewage treatment plant pond Friday night.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department spokesman Andrew Winter said the woman driver was speeding when she hit another car around 7:10 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Highway 132 and Western Avenue. The driver and passengers in the other car were not injured in the crash.

Witnesses told officers after the collision, the woman continued driving and eventually lost control about five minutes later.

Winter said she drove off the road, her car falling down a 150-foot embankment and into the sewage pond located at 335 South Western Avenue, where she died. Officials could not haul her car out of the untreated raw sewage immediately. A special tow truck was called in to assist.

Winter said the vehicle and the unidentified woman's body were hauled out of the pond around 1 a.m. Saturday.
