SACRAMENTO, CA - Law authorities would like to know what happened to a man last seen in the American River after leading officers in a pursuit in a stolen pick-up truck.

The incident unfolded late Thursday morning when a California Highway Patrol officer spotted a truck in the River Park area near Sacramento State University matching one reported stolen a week ago, said Sacramento Police Department spokesman Sgt. Norm Leong.

As the officer followed the truck, Leong said its driver went off the road at University Park on University Avenue and drove toward a levee along the American River. Leong said the driver jumped out of the truck and began shedding his clothes.

As officers converged on the scene, one officer said he thought he saw the man reach an island in the middle of the river. A search and rescue boat crew, search canines and air support were called out but did not find the man, Leong said.

The pickup truck's owner said the theft of his truck has been a real pain because he uses it in his construction work. "I haven't been able to go to work all week because of this. I use my truck for work," said Matthew Underhill.

He may have to wait a bit longer to get his truck back. Police were processing it for evidence.
