SACRAMENTO, CA - If you plan on hitting some garage sales this weekend, there is one you probably don't want to miss.
It's the state of California's garage sale -- and it is a doozy. Stuff, new and used, will be on sale from state offices all round the state.
If California bought it, used it -- or even didn't -- but has no use for it now, it's coming to the surplus warehouse for the Great State of California Garage sale.
"This is an effort to try to get everything try to deal with as much of the surplus property as we can right now, and then continue our ongoing efforts every six weeks out of this warehouse," said Eric Lamoreux with the Department of General Services, which manages the garage sale.
Cars will be a big draw. More than 350 are up for auction, some with Gov. Schwarzenegger's autograph, including a fleet of California Highway Patrol cruisers and motorcycles. Most other items are for sale at a "take or leave it" price.
"We're going to have upwards of 10,000 items here and I'm not an expert on what these items would normally sell for, but the furniture is a tremendous buy here. Our desks, credenzas and items used by state government offices - you can get those for less than a $100," said Lamoreux.
He added that some of the new items still in their boxes will be taken off the sales floor and reassigned to agencies that can use them.
The garage sale takes place at the State of California Surplus Warehouse, 1700 National Drive, Sacramento. Doors open both Friday and Saturday at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
Payment is cash, cashier's check or major credit card. Cash is not accepted for vehicle payments.
Anything you purchase must be taken with you, except for cars which must be picked up within five days.
