UNDATED (AP) -- A new study shows breast cancer survivors have been getting the wrong advice about exercise for years. The study has found that lifting heavy objects does not increase the likelihood of painful arm swelling called lymphedema, which is common among women who've had lymph nodes removed. A total of 141 breast cancer survivors who had suffered lymphedema were separated into two groups. One lifted weights and the other followed regular habits. After one year, the weightlifters were only half as likely to have had lymphedema flareups. The study's results will appear in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
